Horney believed that because of our basic needs as human beings, that neurotic trends develop from those needs. Those with a compliant personality have a neurotic trend of moving toward other people to satisfy their needs of affection and approval. Those with an aggressive personality have a neurotic trend of moving against other people in order to fulfill their needs of power, exploitation, admiration, and achievement. The main difference between Horney and Freud is that Horney, along with many other revered psychologists, are not sold on the Freudian theory of psychosexual development of personality. Horney believes that interactions with people are essential to personality development and because of this sexual development cannot fit into the puzzle of Horney psychological theories.
